Hispano-Jewish Museum
Soon, the family of Jewish museums in Madrid will be a little bigger. Not surprisingly, earlier this year it was announced the opening of a new Hispano-Jewish Museum in the capital. Everything indicates that we will be able to visit it from 2025. Its creation was officially announced by the president of the Community of Madrid on January 22, 2024.
This Madrid Jewish museum turns the capital of Spain into a symbol of multicultural coexistence. Values such as tolerance, understanding and respect for diversity are reinforced by this cultural project.
Far from being a local initiative, this Jewish museum of Madrid and Spain will have a remarkable international projection. It is the first of its kind on a worldwide scale and, in addition, it will have the participation of U.S. citizens thanks to the Hispanic Jewish Endowment of Miami.
A Promising Project of the Hispanic-Jewish Foundation
This new Jewish museum in Madrid has as its main architect the Hispanic-Jewish Foundation. Its raison d’être is to focus on the presence of the Jews in Spain. Truly, a coexistence that lasted for 1,800 years cannot and should not be forgotten. That is why its members promote such exciting projects as this museum in Madrid.
It is no coincidence that the Hispanic-Jewish Foundation was created in 2016. In that year, Spain finally settled its historical debt with the Sephardim, giving their descendants Spanish nationality. The painful wound left in our country by the expulsion of the Jews by the Catholic Monarchs in 1492 was thus closed.
To make this museum a reality, Metro Madrid has ceded the former Metro Electrical Substation to the Fundación Hispano Judía. This building, of great architectural value, will house permanent and temporary exhibitions, including the Paul Dahan Collection and the Backal Gojman Family.
